The origin of International Coffee Day: a celebration that starts on the farm

October 1, 2026 · 2 min read

Some people start the day with a cup of coffee, and others enjoy it after a meal, over conversation or during a break. Coffee is part of everyday life, but it also has a date to celebrate its history and the people who make it possible: October 1, International Coffee Day.

How did this celebration start, and what does it mean?

A date to share coffee with the world

Before there was an international date, several countries already celebrated their own coffee days. In March 2014, the members of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) agreed to set a shared day on October 1. The idea was to bring growers, businesses and coffee drinkers together in a single celebration.

The first official celebration took place on October 1, 2015, during Expo Milano in Italy. It coincided with the International Coffee Council and the first World Coffee Forum, meetings that brought the industry together to talk about its present and future.

That is why you may see Coffee Day mentioned on other dates. National celebrations have their own histories, while October 1 is the date shared around the world.

Honoring the people behind every cup

International Coffee Day celebrates the variety and quality of coffee. It also asks us to recognize the millions of farmers whose livelihoods depend on growing it.

Before it reaches your cup, coffee passes through many hands. Some tend the plants, pick the cherries, process the beans and get them ready for roasting. Then come the people who roast, grind and brew it.

Knowing that journey changes the way we enjoy it. Behind the aroma and the flavor there is time, experience and work.

Celebrating with coffee from Guerrero

At Café Wadi, this date feels close to home: it is a chance to celebrate coffee from Guerrero and the tradition of roasting it in Acapulco.

For us, coffee also lives in memories of home, in the pot of café de olla shared at the table, and in the customers who come back for their favorite blend. That everyday relationship with our customers is part of our story.

You can celebrate International Coffee Day by trying a new way to brew, asking where your beans come from or sharing a cup with someone you love.

This October 1, take a moment to enjoy your coffee and learn a little more about its story.
